Wellbeing Mapping Tool Launches
The wellbeing mapping tool launches
The wellbeing mapping tool enables you to map and graph the 2019 NS Quality of Life Survey results in an interactive way.
With close to 13,000 Nova Scotia residents responding to over 200 questions, the survey results represent the single largest dataset in North America about quality of life. This tool is a breakthrough in terms of making wellbeing data available to people and organizations across the province.
What Nova Scotians made possible
Thanks to each person who responded to the survey, we were able to create and offer this tool. It provides the opportunity to visualize quality of life data in real-time as you select the topic and location you’re interested in.
Here’s what Dr. Bryan Smale, Director of the Canadian Index of Wellbeing (our primary research partner) said about it:
“This is the first time one of our partners is making wellbeing survey results available this way. This is a breakthrough because you can use the tool to understand the perceptions and experiences of Nova Scotia residents at neighbourhood, community, and regional scales.”
How did the wellbeing mapping tool come to be?
The wellbeing mapping tool was designed and built from the ground up by researchers at Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Computer Sciences in partnership with team members at Engage Nova Scotia. This work continues to be gratefully supported by Mitacs through the Mitacs Accelerate program.
Here’s a reflection from John Hepburn, Chief Executive Officer at Mitacs, about their role and our relationship:
“From the innovation we enable to the industry-academic partnerships we build, everything we do at Mitacs is driven by our purpose: to find solutions to address pressing challenges around the world and improve quality of life here at home. Engage Nova Scotia, with the help of Mitacs interns, is working to create those solutions. I’m thrilled that Mitacs was able to connect Engage with these highly skilled researchers and support the team as they developed this innovative tool.”
The wellbeing mapping tool serves as a way to benchmark the NS Quality of Life Survey results and will allow Engage Nova Scotia to layer in new data when they resurvey Nova Scotians in 2024.
